To many people, being fit and healthy is far more important than just looking great and dressing up in the most fashionable outfits. It enables you to feel good, acquire a positive outlook towards life and develop a good stamina to enjoy even more activities.
There are a number of free fitness clubs, classes and initiatives in London. One such initiative is ‘Our Parks’, which provides free group exercise classes, led by experienced, qualified and insured instructors, to parks near you in London, in partnership with Councils/ Local Authorities. If you are not able to access the free offers during your stay in London, you could join one of the pay as you go fitness centres, which do not charge a monthly fee, if you find this more convenient.
Running is free! However, you could join a local running club, expand your social circle by meeting new people, and make new friends who may have similar interests and encourage you to keep on track.
Cycling is one of the best ways to stay in shape and it is free if you have your own bike. If you do not have your own bike, Transport for London has provided bikes for hire in many parts of central London for a small fee. You can cover more ground faster, while still taking in the sights and sounds. However, do invest in hi-vis gear and a helmet as these hire bikes do not come with any of these.
If you want to have fun while keeping fit in London, you might wish to try the Strava app which lets you track your running and riding with GPS, join challenges, share photos from your activities, and follow friends. It is equally useful for running and cycling and allows you to connect with others who take the same route as you for cycling, running and jogging.
Keep your motivation levels up by having short, attainable goals and a fitness or gym buddy. Remember to maintain hydration. A hydrated body delivers more energy, improved stamina and alertness. Avoid fizzy drinks because of the high sugar content in them, which your body continually stores if you do not have an active lifestyle.
